New Jersey Scholastic Rowing Championships Regatta Awards
Senior Men’s Eight: Dr. Holland Memorial Trophy
The Dr. Holland Cup is awarded to the winner of the Men’s Senior Eight. Doc’s lifelong love of athletics led him to
create the Viking Rowing Club that provides the opportunity for rowers of all ages and ability to learn the sport.
Over 10 thousand have benefited from the various VRC programs. The VRC honored him for all his contributions
by naming their new boathouse the Dr. John W. Holland Boathouse in 2000.
Dr. Holland received many honors for his outstanding contributions to the community, including the 2001 Hero of the
Year from the American Red Cross, Holy Spirit Hall of Fame Inductee, 1998 Margate-Ventnor Lion’s Citizen of the
Year, and the New Jersey Sports Writers Special Award in 1983.

The Rita McDevitt Cup is awarded to the winner of the Women’s Senior Eight. Rita McDevitt was one of the
founders of the Holy Spirit Women’s crew program.

Second Boy’s Eight: William Brown Memorial Trophy
The William Brown Memorial Trophy is awarded to the winner of the Boy’s Second Eight.

The Marie Louise Tuohy Cup is awarded to the winner of the Women’s Second Eight.

Junior Men’s Eight: Michael Pasqua Cup
The Michael Pasqua Cup is awarded to the winner of the Men’s Junior Eight. Michael was the Head Coach at
Kearny High School for over 20 years. He was one of the founders of the crew program. He is a retired science
teacher from the Kearny School District where he taught junior high school science for over 25 years.

Freshman Men’s Eight: Millar Memorial Trophy
The Millar Cup is awarded to the winner of the Men’s Freshman Eight.

Freshman Women’s Eight: McCann Cup
The McCann Cup is awarded to the winner if the Women’s Freshman Eight. In honor of Charles and Mary Brennan McCann, great supporters of the sport of rowing who always loved to watch the kids and grand kids compete. They always said everyone who raced was a Champion.

The Andrew T. Salisbury Cup is awarded to the winner of the Men’s Novice Eight. Andrew devoted his life as an
advocate of youth development.

Novice Women’s Eight: Ann Sweeney Memorial Cup
The Ann Sweeney Cup is awarded to the winner of the Novice Women’s Eight. Ann was the wife of long time
Kearny rigger John Sweeney. The Sweeney family has been part of the Kearny rowing program for over 30 years.

The Sam Giufrieda Cup is awarded to the winner of the Men’s Senior Four. Sam was the Head Coach and History
teacher at Belleville High School for over 25 years before his untimely death. He was inspiration to everyone who
knew him and will be surely missed by the rowing community.

Senior Women’s Four: Daniel Gray Memorial Cup
Dan was an ardent supporter of rowing since 1988. Although not a rower himself, Dan
appreciated the energy and dedication required by the sport, as well as the strong
teamwork it build among rowers.

Men’s Lightweight Four: John Bacis Memorial Cup
The John Bacis Cup is awarded to the winner of the Men’s Lightweight four.

Women’s Lightweight Four: Tom Dowd Cup
The Tom Dowd Cup is awarded to the winner of the Women’s Lightweight Four. Tom has been a major advocate of youth rowing for over 40 years. He was the Director of the prestigious Stotesbury Cup Regatta and Board member of the Scholastic Rowing Association, Tom is can be found rowing every morning on the Schuylkill with his friends from The Fairmont Boat Club where he competes on the Masters level. Tom is the recipient of the Jack Franklin Award for outstanding service to the sport of rowing as an official.
